Emma's
Birth Story
By Meghan & Marc
Dear
Dena,
Marc
and I had our baby girl! Emma Claire was born October 7th, at
8:04 PM. She weighed 8 pounds 11 ounces, and was 21 ¼ inches
long. Emma was due October 1st and we were scheduled for an induction
on the
8th. The threat of induction with a combination of spicy foods,
sex, and lots of walking finally got my labor started. I went
into labor Thursday night. I was able to relax the whole time,
and I actually got a lot of sleep that night, just waking up to
time my contractions to see if they were getting closer.
By
the morning, they were 5 minutes apart for two hours. Marc and
I both listened to the rainbow relaxation to kill time before
we called the doctor. (We had been listening to it every night
since class.) The doctor said to come into the hospital. When
we got there at 10am and my surges had slowed to 8 mins apart
and longer, and I was 4-5 cm. They gave me the option to go home,
or stay and hang out and use the big tub and relax. We opted to
stay.
We
were both very relaxed, and my surges were never closer than 5
mins apart. We both got a few little naps in between activities.
(Showering, bathtub, walking, yoga ball.) At 5pm, I decided to
let them release my membranes, since I was not progressing at
all. That really got things going. Unfortunately that's when I
started to have back labor. I wasn't expecting it, since I knew
the baby was facing the right way. I tried to do the polar bear,
but I couldn't without throwing up. My surges stayed at 5 minutes
apart or more, they got more intense, but I was able to keep using
my deep breathing. The last hour or so, I felt like they were
right on top of each other. Marc said I would become so relaxed
between surges, I would basically fall asleep, and wake up for
the next one. At the end, deep breathing became too difficult,
but the quick breathing we learned really came in handy. I remember
saying, "I can't do this anymore" and that's when the
doctor came in and said it was time to have the baby.
The
nurses didn't believe that I was ready to push, since I was so
relaxed and my contractions had stayed to far apart. They asked
me if I wanted to breath my baby down, and I said yes. When the
time came, they made me push because the baby was in
a bit of distress. (Her heart rate had dropped, and the umbilical
cord was wrapped around her neck). I didn't know any of this at
the time, but Marc was able to remain calm, keeping me calm.
The
first push was difficult, because they told me to hold my breath,
and I had been so focused on breathing. At the second surge, I
had a good push and the head came mostly out. I let out a large
scream, (totally involuntarily) and the doctor yelled "stop
screaming and push!". With the third push she popped right
out. She was blue, but after seeing so many birthing videos, we
knew that wasn't a problem. The pushing stage of labor only took
6 minutes. She is doing great and so are we.
The
hypnobirthing worked very well for us. I was cursing it my last
few minutes of labor, and almost ready to ask for drugs, but at
that point it would have been too late anyway. We did a lot of
fear release scripts during the pregnancy, and they really helped.
I was having a problem with breast feeding after she was born,
so we did a fear release replacing "birthing" with "feeding"
and it worked great. We listened to the rainbow relaxation every
night to help us get to sleep, and we still listen to it most
nights. It was great to listen to in the hospital after she was
born. It helped me get the rest I needed between feedings. The
nurse told me "She has seen hundreds of births, and mine
was awesome." The doctors said she was really impressed that
I had a natural birth with such a big baby. I felt great afterwards.
I recovered very quickly.
There
were 4 births that day, and I was the only vaginal, let alone
natural. I felt a little guilty that I was feeling so good, and
the other women in the maternity ward all looked like they had
been through hell. Thank you so much for teaching us. We are so
happy we took your class and that the birth of our daughter went
so well.
Thank you,
Meghan, Marc and Emma
